2007
Enrique Mendoza
La Tremenda
Monastrell
Alicante

"The entry-level 2007 La Tremenda is 100% Monastrell aged for 6 months in seasoned American oak. Dark ruby-colored with an alluring perfume of spice box, underbrush, blueberry, and blackberry, on the palate it displays a friendly personality with succulent fruit and no hard edges. Drink this pleasure-bent effort over the next 4 years. Bodegas Enrique Mendoza was founded in 1989." (WA)
Wine Advocate: 87 pts.
"Clean, solid aromas of black cherry and berry are just what you want from Spanish Monastrell, and while this isn’t the most unique or original wine, it sure is tasty, balanced and pleasing. Flavors of lightly baked black fruits are lush, while the finish is medium-long and easygoing. Hard to find anything wrong with this affordable red from Alicante." (WE)
Wine Enthusiast: 88 pts.
Wine Description:
The name "La Tremenda" is in reference to the name of the vineyard where the grapes are grown.
Tasting Notes:
Cherryred in color with fresh fruit aromas mixed with notes of toast and cocoa. The wine has a very full sensation in the mouth, with a long finish.

$45 WINE FOR $24.95!!
2010
Two Hands
Cabernet Sauvignon
Sexy Beast
McLaren Vale

"
Ripe and supple, offering a velvety mouthful of blueberry, dark plum and currant flavors, shaded with hints of smoky meat and roasted herbs. Finishes with intensity. Drink now through 2017. 1,250 cases imported. " (WS)
Wine Spectator: 91 pts.

Color: A lovely deep purple
Nose: This wine springs forth on a bouquet of lavender, creosote, warm plums, cranberries and hot oil, a lovely minty floral Asian spice follows.
Taste: The palate is where this wine really shines as it bursts forth with a build, detail and density rarely seen from a McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon. There are very intelligent tannins at play here and they hold the varietal character right to the end, the fruit fits so beautifully into the structure.

NV
Rare Red
"RR"
Four Varietal Blend
California

In the 1950s and 60s, generic wines far outsold varietal wines. The generics were called Chablis, Burgundy, Rose, Sauternes and Rhine wine. They were blends, and some of them were very good. In those years there were only a dozen or two premium wineries with national distribution. Their best sellers, on and off sale, were Chablis and Burgundy. Varietals were sold at higher prices than the generics and that is still true today. In 2006 our government struck a trade bargain with Europe and abolished the use of European generic names unless grandfathered. It all but ended the era of California Chablis and Burgundy.

Today, instead of generics, wineries produce up-scale, blended wines, that can be categorized as “proprietary wines”. They are generally blends of specified varietals with a unique name created by the producer. These wines are born from surplus wine availability in the market and from the individual inventories of a producer. They are usually created to achieve lower pricing, below the pricing of straight varietals. They should be “bargains”! Americans have an insatiable desire for variety, novelty and variation. A blended wine which specifies its varietal content can be very appealing, complex, exciting, and very satisfying, with an affordable price! Our concept is to vary “Rare Red” in accordance with our opportunities in the wine market and with the other wines we produce. We therefore will change the blend from time to time, but we will always maintain the high quality of this blend, and offer you an outstanding value with “Rare Red”!

Rare Red is a blend of 4-varietals from select Calif. wine growing districts: Syrah - 45.54% Carignane - 31.91% Zinfandel - 21.89% Cabernet Franc - 0.66%.

The attributes of the four varietals all contribute to the excellence of this full bodied blend. Syrah provides body and structure. Carignane adds bright fruit flavors. Zinfandel mitigates the more tannic Syrah and creates an aroma of blackberries. Barrel aged Cabernet Franc contributes color and oak. This everyday wine is both exceptional and unusual. It is a bigger wine than its predecessor JM-11/16/2011

NEW LIMIED ARRIVAL!!
2010
Georges Duboeuf
Moulin-a-Vent
Flower Label
Beaujolais

"The Duboeuf 2010 Moulin-a-Vent informs a soothingly, silkenly polished palate with ripe blackberry and plum as well as a mouthwatering savor akin to meaty pan juices. Buddleia-like perfume rises as the wine takes on air, and persists inner-mouth. The fruit’s tart edge serves for invigoration while nut oils add a further layer to the sustained finish. This outstanding value ought to drink well for at least 3-4 years – not that one should miss out on experiencing its youth. George Duboeuf and his estate-collaborators – for further general comments on whom consult my issue 190 report – harvested from mid-September into the first week of October and pronounced themselves reasonably satisfied with the size of their crop as well as its quality. Most of the fruit came in at between 12-12.5% alcohol, with only a small share being chaptalized. And while the manner of extraction typically practiced chez Duboeuf strikes me as serving for rather uniformly deep colors, Duboeuf remarked that the 2010s colored with particular, and surprising, ease. The percentage of wines bottled at the time of my June visit was, predictably, considerably higher than had been the case for the 2009s at the same point on the calendar. Observing conventions established in the aforementioned previous report, I have made reference to aging potential only for any wines that I expect might be worth following for longer than a couple of years, and where I have identified a wine solely by appellation, it represents a so-called “Selections Georges Duboeuf” cuvee, adorned with his company’s signature flower labels. I also tasted on this occasion several late-released, wooded “prestige” bottlings – rendered in 1,000-2,500 volumes – which however were not destined to appear in U.S. markets." (WA)

2010
Foxglove
Chardonnay
Central Coast

"The 2010 Chardonnay is one of the top values in California wine. It possesses tons of ripe, varietal fruit in a style that is quite rich but not heavy. Clean citrus and floral notes add freshness on the long finish. Lees stirring gives the wine much of its richness, while aging in steel helps maintain freshness. There is remarkable depth and textural finesse here, never mind a price that is mind-boggling for this level of quality. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2014. I was blown away by the two wines I tasted from Foxglove, Bob and Jim Varner’s negociant label. The Varners clearly have the magic touch. These are among the finest values readers will find anywhere in the world." (WA)

NEW LOWER PRICE!!
2011
Crios De Susana Balbo
Torrontes
Mendoza
"The 2011 Torrontes offers up enticing aromas of peach, melon, floral, and tropical fruit. Medium-bodied, dry, savory, and nicely proportioned, this lengthy effort will deliver plenty of enjoyment over the next 1-2 years. The Crios label is synonymous with Argentina’s leading female wine personality, Susana Balbo. However, she has handed over winemaking duties to her son, Jose Lovaglio. Perhaps it is my imagination, but the current releases (with the exception of the winery’s specialty, Torrontes) lack the sizzle of recent vintages. Even so, they are all excellent values." (WA)
Wine Advocate: 90 pts.
"Pale yellow. Sexy, slightly exotic aromas of wild herbs, flowers, licorice, mint and spices. Juicy, saline and dry, with a subtly tactile mouth feel to the flavors of lemon verbena, lavender and botanical herbs. There's an enticing dusty impression of soil here but plenty of sweet citrus fruits too. Savory and serious but there's nothing austere about it. An outstanding example of Argentina's distinctive torrontes, which makes a perfect aperitif." (IWC)
International Wine Cellar: 90 pts.
Enticing aromas that are strikingly similar to Viognier, with hints of peach pit, white pear, flowers, and orange citrus fruit. On the palate, it has beautiful structure and acidity similar to Sauvignon Blanc along with enticing fruit flavors that keep you coming back for another sip and plenty of body for a wine that shows such delicate aromas and flavors. Fruity, floral and yet still quite dry, this wine has to be tasted to be believed. Best enjoyed in its youth either by itself, or as a wonderful partner with smoked meats, mild to medium-strong cheeses, and seafood (especially crab!).

2009
Fattoria di Felsina
Chianti Classico Berardenga
Tuscany

"In a darker, balsamic vein, this red evokes tar, black cherry, underbrush and tobacco flavors. They're all held together by the dense, fine tannins. Oak spice emerges on the taut finish. Best from 2014 through 2025. 24,166 cases made." (WS)
Wine Spectator: 91 pts.
"The 2009 Chianti Classico shows excellent weight and depth to match its expressive dark red fruit. This is an especially open vintage for the Chianti Classico. The 2009 is probably not destined for a super long life, but will drink beautifully for at least a handful of years. Hints of earthiness and tar add to an impression of gravitas in this vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2021." (WA)

Cabernet Sauvignon
Tanbark Hill Vineyard
Spring Mountain District, Napa Valley

"The 2009 Tanbark Hill is a rich, voluptuous wine graced with layers of expressive fruit, smoke and tobacco. It shows quite a bit of depth for this bottling. Licorice, crushed flowers, spices and mint wrap around the plush, inviting finish. This is all elegance and class. In 2009 one-third of the production was bottled as Tanbark Hill. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019." (WA)

NEW RELEASE & WHAT A TRACK RECORD!!
2009
Bodegas El Nido
Clio
Jumilla

30% Cabernet Sauvignon 32 Year Old Vines, 70% Monastrell 67 Year Old Vines
Estate bottled.
The grapes for this wine come from 12 hectares (29.65 acres) of Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards, planted in 1979, yielding an average of 2,400k/ha (2,136 lbs./acre), and 32 hectares (79 acres) of Monastrell vineyards, planted in 1944, yielding an average of 1,600k/ha (1,425 lbs./acre). The vines are subjected to several passes during harvest. With each passing the workers choose only the most mature bunches leaving the others to develop further. The grapes are harvested into small baskets to prevent bruising. Monastrell grapes were harvested the last 2 weeks in September and the Cabernet grapes were harvested the first 2 weeks in October. The famous Australian winemaker, Chris Ringland, oversees the winemaking process. The bunches are brought to triage tables for selection of only the healthiest, ripest grapes; followed by fermentation in open small vats that hold only 3 or 4 tons per batch for 7 days. The grapes are basket pressed and fermentation is finished in oak barrels. New French and American oak barrels are used for malolactic fermentation. The wines are aged for 26 months in new barrels. Production: 2,250 cases of 6 bottles.

2010
Domaine d' Andezon
Cotes-du-Rhone
Vignerons d’Estezargues
Rhone

"The classic cuvee, which has long been selected by importer Eric Solomon, is their 2010 Domaine d’Andezon, a blend of 90% Syrah and 10% Grenache. While there are critics of Syrah grown in the southern Rhone, even the cynics agree that the old-vine Syrah from the Gard has a special character to it. This wine comes from 40+-year-old Syrah vines and 60+-year-old Grenache vines, bottled unfined and unfiltered after being aged in both tank and concrete. Dense ruby/purple, with a stunning nose of blackberry liqueur and jus de viande (beef/meat juices), its thrilling, intensely pure, full-bodied mouthfeel, good freshness, and striking floral character all combine for one of the very best bargains in dry red wine that readers are likely to find anywhere in the world. This is super and should continue to drink well for another 3-4 years. This co-op, located just south of the village of Chateauneuf du Pape in the sector known as the Gard, has been a perennial top-bargain pick in The Wine Advocate." (WA)

Chardonnay
Mendoza

"The 2010 Felino Chardonnay was native yeast fermented with the wine going through full malolactic fermentation. It offers up a lovely bouquet of melon, spiced apple, and floral notes setting the stage for a smooth-textured, flavorful, well-balanced wine that will provide enjoyment for another 3-4 years. It is an outstanding value. Vina Cobos is a partnership between Paul Hobbs, Andrea Marchiori, and Luis Barraud. The new releases are further confirmation that Vina Cobos is one of Argentina’s great producers. The Felino label has for a number of years been synonymous with value." (WA)

STILL AN AMAZING VALUE AT AN EYE OPENING PRICE!
2009
Columbia Crest
Cabernet Sauvignon
H3
Horse Heaven Hills

"Focused, refined and appealing for its open-weave texture around a generous core of plum and currant fruit, finishing with hints of coffee and dark chocolate. Drink now through 2014. 69,000 cases made." (WS)
Wine Spectator: 90 pts.
"Inviting aromas of cassis, licorice and dark berries mingle with slight earth notes. The voluminous texture is accented by flavors of fruit preserves and leads to a long and silky finish." The growing season was perfect with dry, warm weather and lots of sunshine. Although bloom was delayed slightly by cool spring weather, warm temperatures soon returned and perfect ripening weather lasted through September. A freeze in the Columbia Valley on the night of October 10th led to a slightly early end to the harvest season. However most grapes were already picked or had already reached a good level of maturity. Overall the 2009 vintage produced wines with lots of natural acidity and fruit-forward flavors. Grapes were crushed at 20% whole-berry to retain fruit quality. Fermentation lasted 6-10 days on the skins to extract optimum fruit and structural components. Various yeasts were used to maintain fruit flavors and complexity. The wine was racked three times during the 18 month barrel aging period.

NEW ARRIVAL!!
2009
Zilliken
Saarburger Rausch
Riesling Spatlese #6
Mosel-Saar-Ruwer

"Opulent and ripe, with lush, concentrated flavors of apricot, apple strudel and Key lime pie. There's a powerful minerality and acidity to this wine, which finishes with notes of honey cream and lemon meringue. Drink now through 2030." (WS)
Wine Spectator: 93 pts.

"Now we're at the maximum of what could be achieved this year without botrytis," says Zilliken of the 2009 Saarburger Rausch Riesling Spatlese A.P. #6, made up of golden bunches rather similar to those that informed the Grosses Gewachs or "Diabas" bottlings except including in addition browning, beginning-botrytis berries such as lightly informed even this year's Rausch Kabinett. Pink grapefruit, mango, and pineapple scent and lusciously saturate a palate as saliva-inducing, refreshing, and near-weightless as that of the corresponding Kabinett. But not only is there more effusive and tropically-tilted ripeness on hand here, there is yet richer texture; spicier pungency; and an incongruously enhanced degree of minerality in the form of peat-like smokiness, crushed stone, lip-licking salinity, and somehow seemingly crystalline impingements. I expect this will perform beautifully for at least a quarter century (Zilliken compares it with his corresponding 1983, a wine that still drinks beautifully)." (WA)
Wine Advocate: 93 pts.
"($48) Dried apricot, acacia honey and cinnamon on the nose, with just a hint of botrytis. The palate offers an unctuous sweetness with a baked apple texture, a honeyed glaze and subtle mineral depth. Infinitely appealing, slightly spicy finish." (IWC)
International Wine Cellar: 91 pts.

NEW ARRIVAL!!
2009
Louis Jadot
Beaune Clos des Ursules
1er Cru
(Domaine des Heritiers)
Cote de Beaune

"The 2009 Beaune Clos des Ursules is another terrific effort. Nothing in particular stands out, just the wine’s fabulous overall balance. A seamless, beautifully integrated red, the 2009 Clos des Ursules flows across the palate with layers of textured fruit. Silky tannins frame an exceptionally elegant and polished finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022. I tasted an impressive range of wines with Jacques Lardiere and his successor Frederic Barnier, who is slated to take over when Lardiere retires at the end of 2012. Jadot makes a mind-bending number of wines, but I limited myself to the best 35 or so examples. In 2009 Jadot began harvesting on September 6. All of the reds were made from 100% destemmed fruit. Maceration times varied from wine to wine, but according to Lardiere all of the wines were made with essentially the same approach. Lardiere is another of the producers who compares 2009 to 1959, and believes the wines will age well because of their density of fruit and minerality. Many of the estate’s own vineyards are farmed biodynamically, but of course Jadot also sources a significant amount of wine from other growers that is not necessarily from biodynamically farmed vineyards." (WA)
Wine Advocate: 90-92 pts.
"Medium red. Laid-back aromas of redcurrant, minerals, leather and oak. Dense, chewy and nicely concentrated but at the same time elegantly styled. The slowly mounting finish features broad, fine-grained tannins and excellent length. A very strong showing. Lardiere notes that his Beaune wines are aging in about 40% new oak." (IWC)
International Wine Cellar: 89 pts.
"A very ripe yet solidly complex and broad-ranging nose of red currant, raspberry and spice hints leads to lightly earth-suffused middle weight flavors that possess good detail as well as solid mid-palate density on the dusty, firm and slightly clipped finish. This may very well come together but at present, it's showing awkwardly." (BH)

Bodegas Muga
Rioja
Reserva

"The 2007 Reserva is a blend of 70% Tempranillo with the balance Garnacha, Mazuelo, and Graciano aged initially for 6 months in wood vats followed by 24 months in 60% new French and American oak prior to bottling without filtration. It displays classic Rioja aromas of cedar, leather, mineral, a hint of balsamic, and assorted black fruits. Layered on the palate but slightly austere at present, it has the structure to evolve for another 4-6 years at which point it is likely to have filled out thus meriting a higher rating. Drink this impressive Rioja from 2015 to 2027." (WA)
Wine Advocate: 91+ pts.

"($28) (70% tempranillo and 20% garnacha, with mazuelo and graciano): Deep ruby. Powerful cherry and blackberry on the nose, with alluring smoked meat and licorice notes and a suggestion of candied rose. Full, fleshy dark berry and bitter cherry flavors are lifted by a gentle mineral note and are supported by silky tannins. Gains sweetness on the persistent finish, which features an exotic note of resiny, cured tobacco. This is the only wine that Muga commercialized from the 2007 vintage." (IWC)

2009
Snowden
Cabernet Sauvignon
Reserve
Napa Valley

"The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is drop-dead gorgeous. Dark red fruit, tobacco, flowers and licorice emerge from this massive, powerful wine. The Reserve fleshes out beautifully on the palate as the fruit gains dimension and volume. Hints of licorice, menthol and tar wrap around the powerful, structured finish. This is a dazzling showing from Snowden. The 2009 harvest was not an easy one, but Diana Snowden Seysses did a brilliant job coping with the October rains. In 2009 the blend is 75.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19.1% Merlot, 3.8% Cabernet Franc and 1.6 % Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029. Snowden Vineyards lies in one of the more remote corners of Napa Valley, next to Sloan and Hall on one of its borders. Unpaved roads accessible only by 4x4 lead to the hillside vineyards. Over the last few years, the Snowden family has made significant investments with the goal of improving viticulture. As for the wines, they are terrific and getting better under the leadership of Diana Snowden Seysses, who also makes wine in Burgundy with her husband, Jeremy Seysses of Domaine Dujac. Talk about a power couple! The 2010s, which I tasted in separate components, are highly promising." (WA)

Sauvignon Blanc
Marlborough

"Fragrant and tropical, displaying pineapple, grapefruit, dragon fruit and melon flavors. There's a juicy acidity, with great persistence on the finish. Drink now. 360,000 cases imported." (WS)
Wine Spectator: 89 pts.
These grapes were selected from vineyards in Marlborough's Wairau Valley and the neighboring Awatere Valley. Fast draining, alluvial loams over gravelly sub soils in these valleys provide ideal growing conditions for our Sauvignon Blanc. Individual blocks were targeted for their strengths and overall contribution to the blend. The vines ranged in age from 18 months to fifteen years bringing a mix of youthful vigor and depth of flavour. The grapes were machine harvested in the cool of the evening and overnight to preserve flavours and pressed immediately with minimal skin contact. Each block was kept separate throughout the various stages of the winemaking process. Fermentations were carried out at cool temperatures and when all tanks had completed ferment they were proportionately blended, fined, stabilised and bottled. All these factors have resulted in the plethora of fruit flavours, crisp acidity and complexity of this stunning wine.

Hedges Family Estate
C.M.S. Red Blend
Columbia Valley

39% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, and 16% Syrah
"First, let me clear something up. In this case, C.M.S. does not stand for the Centers for Medicare Services as some might have thought. It actually stands for the grapes that make up this Washington red blend – Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah. And what a fantastic blend it is! Washington wines are finally hitting many enthusiasts’ radars and for good reason. The quality is outstanding and the values are abundant. Furthermore, a perfect wine growing climate means incredible consistency – even more than the very consistent north coast of California. This wine should really be called M.C.S. this year, because it’s dominated, both in taste and volume by 45% Merlot. 39% Cabernet and 16% Syrah round out a nice blend that stresses round fruit over tannin and oak. The finish is nice and long and the mouthfeel round and broad, likely thanks to the Merlot. Hedges Family Estate has been making this wine since 1987. It’s a well established value that usually sells at around $12. At LA Wine Company’s $7.99 it’s an outright bargain."
(Nickel & Dime)
CMS Red, Washington State's original blended red wine, has been produced and bottled by the estate since 1987. Consistently recognized as one of the best values in Washington State, CMS Red combines elegance and historic blending practices with top quality vineyard sources in the Columbia Valley. A style consistent with classic northern latitude wine growing, the CMS Red is known for a more Columbia Valley AVA regionally driven style, giving way to purity and structure over modernity.
Tasting Notes: Dark ruby color. A hint of sweetness, medium plus body with well integrated tannins that linger on the long finish. A nicely balanced wine, with enough acid and tannin to make this an excellent compliment to many foods.
Cellaring: This is a wine meant to be enjoyed in its youth.
Production: Grapes were grown throughout the greater Columbia Valley in the Horse Heaven Hills, Wahluke Slope, Red Mountain, and Columbia Valley AVAs. The wine was on new oak for 5 weeks, 60% French and 40% American.
Harvest Notes: Ideal spring conditions in 2009 allowed for normal fruit set. The summer brought many days between 85 and 90 degrees, optimum temperatures for photosynthesis, and fewer days above 100 degrees, which would normally halt photosynthesis. The end result was early and simultaneous ripening in all varietals. In the third week of September, unusually high temperatures caused some premature raisining and an early and very busy harvest. We worked diligently to harvest at ideal ripeness in order to maximize fruit quality, making for another excellent vintage.
