"A medium-weight bubbly, with good richness as a foil for the apple, bread dough and honey notes. A citrus note emerges on the finish. Drink now through 2012. 2,000 cases imported." (WS)
"The NV Brut Extra Cuvee de Reserve is a pleasing mid-weight effort. The wine shows attractive floral aromas and focused fruit, with excellent poise and balance. The Brut Extra Cuvee de Reserve is equal parts Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. This is Lot BLLE 1/1, disgorged beginning of 2008. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2010.
Pol Roger is one of Champagne’s historic houses. I have long admired the estate’s Champagnes for their superb balance and gracefulness. This year I found the best wines at the bottom and top of the ranges, while the mid-level wines revealed some inconsistency, something that is not uncommon among properties of this size. The tete de cuvee, Sir Winston Churchill, named after the estate’s most famous customer, is often among the finest wines in the region. Lot numbers are stamped on the corks, but it would be nice to see Pol Roger indicate the disgorgement date on its labels." (WA)
"($50) (L11961873B): Light yellow-gold. Aromas of candied citrus fruits, ripe pear, toasty lees and minerals, with a hint of musky herbs in the background. Powerful, palate-staining orchard fruit and citrus flavors show a refreshing bitterness and are underscored by chalky minerals. Closes nervy and dry, with excellent clarity and smoky persistence." Winery Notes:
The definitive house-style, composed of some 30 bases wines drawn from at least two vintages, and the three cépages of Champagne, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay, blended in approximately equal proportions, one third of each. This, our most popular cuvée, is never sold with less than 3 years maturity. It is a perfect complement to any Champagne occasion.
Tasting Notes: With a brilliant golden color, the wine shows fresh and lively aromas of cloves and roses, with breadcrumb, yeast and citrus fruit notes. In the mouth, the attack is straight as an arrow, surprising after the mature, concentrated nose. The wine’s firm texture puts into relief a sumptuous wine, fine and well-structured. The trailing aromas of honey and cloves come with subtlety, lending extra depth and contributing to its long length on the palate. It is a thoroughbred wine; svelte and shapely. |
